Dramatic frame, but good for drawing reader into the story. The 'flashbacks' give motion to the pictures. I like the wordplay with cooking and unprepared. The emphasis on ME in connection with 'torn' even widens the impact. Very emotional style.

For the sake of your readership - keep writing. You're getting there...
