Seagulls in the Town

Seagulls in the Town
White birds amidst the drifting snow
roam in a silent hungry row.
They do not touch the empty ground,
for them there is no food around
if people do not care.
Some crows are mingling with the white.
Brave struggles for a tiny bite
confuse the floating in the sky
with angry flaps of wings, a cry,
when people throw some scraps into the air.
But soon they’ll be no more in town.
The sun will thaw the white to brown.
Supported by new wealth of spring
they’ll go to where they feed and sing
when harbor and the ground lie bare.

Book by Irene Beddies:
