God Double Blesses Job

© 2012

Job, a righteous man who lived thousands of years ago in the land of Uz, loved the Sovereign Lord and hated the appearance of evil.

God blessed Job and his wife with seven sons and three daughters. The greatest of all the men of the East, Job owned many sheep, cattle, oxen and donkeys.

Job thought his sons and daughters may have sinned against God, so he offered burnt offerings to God for them.

One day, Satan appeared before the Lord. Job 1:8-12 says, “And the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought? Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face. And the Lord said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord.”

Then Job’s sons and daughters were killed, as were his servants, and many of his animals. The camels were stolen. Job worshipped God. Job 1:21-22 says, “And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord. In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.”

Once again Satan presented himself before God. In Job 2:1-8, God gave Satan permission to touch Job‘s body but to spare his life. Verses 7-8 states, “So went Satan forth from the presence of the Lord, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown. And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself withal; and he sat down among the ashes.”

Job had a long conversation with three friends, Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar, against whom the Lord’s anger was kindled. Job then prayed for his friends and God once again blessed him abundantly, giving him twice as many riches as he previously had. God also blessed Job with seven sons and three daughters.

Job thought to himself, “Do you ever wish the Lord had given you twice as many sons and daughters as you had before?”

Chuckling, Job replied to himself, “No, I love all my children very much, but God knew that if He had given us 10 more children, that would have been too many blessings for us to handle!”
