The Dog Days of Summer

When summer bears its scorching reign,
and everyone complains of pain,
the city's heat hangs thick and still,
while sweat runs freely at its will,

when all our rooms are burning bright,
our nerves are strained from day to night,
when people seek the cooling shade,
of nothing but the heat afraid,

I reach out for a fresh melon,
devor it happily head on,
enjoy an ice cream cool and sweet -
forgotten is distress and heat!

I freshly mix a fruity juice,
iced coffee might us well seduce
A cool white wine at least at dawn
and all the stress is simply gone

I love the cellar's cooling air,
the supermarket's welcome care,
a babbling brook, the forest's grace,
a lake and pool, a resting place

A cooling shower lifts my soul
I do not wander without goal,
avoid unnecessary strain
and guard my inner peace again
