Rolph David

A Continent in Borrowed Code

Ten children stand; two hold no glowing screen,
The rest are caught within the vast machine.
Their data flows to lands they cannot see,
Where distant giants claim both code and fee.

We train their minds with every post and share,
While value leaves, and Europe has but air.
Not all we use must lie beyond our hand,
Yet critical must stay within our land.

Patronage and fear delay the needed break,
Small reforms collapse beneath the lobby's stake.
Our health, our states, our finance must remain,
Kept under rules that we alone ordain.

We need not wall ourselves, but guard it all,
And keep what matters most, lest we may fall.
