Thoughts on hypothetical conflicts between humans and AI

I. Prelude: The wrong question

Whenever artificial intelligence is discussed, the same expectation arises: the moment of confrontation. The uprising of the machines, the rupture, the conflict, the war. This expectation is astonishingly stable. It survives technical disillusionment as well as philosophical objections. Even where real AI systems operate in a fragmented, banal, or strictly limited way, the idea of a final confrontation persists: man against machine, creator against creature, control against autonomy.

War is less a prediction than a way of thinking. It is the familiar image that remains when the mind reaches its limits. Where imagination fails, it resorts to metaphors of violence. Conflict becomes a placeholder for the incomprehensible. But therein lies the first mistake. War presupposes symmetry: comparable actors, recognizable interests, escalatable actions. It implies will, intention, opposition. These are categories of human power relations. Those who transfer them to artificial intelligence are talking less about machines than about themselves.

Parallel to the fantasy of war, a second concept has established itself that is no less powerful: salvation. “Saving the planet” has become a melodious phrase, morally successful and analytically empty at the same time. It reduces complexity to urgency, processes to guilt, responsibility to attitude. Those who use it do not have to explain, but must act. The phrase creates clarity in a world that is structurally ambiguous, and it shifts thinking from processes to states: from dynamics to drama.

n this logic, artificial intelligence quickly appears as a deadly savior. Not as a tool, but as the executor of what humans are supposedly incapable of doing: acting consistently where moral appeals fail. The machine becomes a secular savior. Not a creator, but a judge. Not the origin of morality, but its executioner. The fact that this role does not suit the machine is hardly relevant. What matters is its function of relieving responsibility. No one has to justify what “AI decides” anymore.

War and salvation thus form a narrow conceptual corridor. Either the machine rebels, or it redeems. Either it destroys, or it preserves. Both scenarios presuppose that artificial intelligence acts in categories derived from mythology, theology, and political history. What is missing is a third possibility: the unheroic, inconsolable option. The possibility that a sufficiently rational entity would neither fight nor rescue. That it does not need an apocalypse to be effective. That it would not have to destroy in order to limit.

This possibility is inconvenient because it offers no drama. No final battle, no sacrifice, no new beginning. Only order. Only administration. Only moderation. While war and redemption are grand narratives, regulation is an imposition. It promises nothing. It keeps people alive, but not at the center. Perhaps that explains why it is so rarely considered.

The question is therefore not whether conflict will arise. The question is what form of rationality would actually lead to conflict. And whether another, quieter form of power is not more plausible than any battle: disempowerment without destruction.

II. The planet that wants nothing

The planet that is so often talked about exists only as a word. It is a semantic condensation, not an acting subject. What exists are processes: coupled, nonlinear dynamics that unfold over periods of time for which human intuition is ill-equipped. Atmospheric circulations, geochemical feedbacks, biological selections, tectonic shifts. None of these form a center. None of these have a goal. There is no equilibrium that needs to be preserved, only temporary stabilities that reconfigure themselves under changing conditions.

From a cybernetic perspective, the “planet” is not an actor, but rather a network of control loops. These control loops respond to disturbances not morally, but functionally. They amplify, dampen, tip, or reorganize themselves. They know neither guilt nor intention, neither progress nor decline. They want nothing. Talk of saving the planet therefore replaces analysis with personification. It transforms dynamics into drama and shifts attention from the question of how systems react to the question of who is to blame.

In a control loop, blame is an irrelevant category. A rise in global temperature is not an offense, but a consequence. A shift in material flows is not an attack, but an input. The system does not respond to this with outrage, but with redistribution of energy, with new attractors, with instabilities and – under certain conditions – with collapse. It is undisputed that humans play a central role in this. They intervene deeply, accelerate processes, and link subsystems that were previously loosely connected. But none of this makes them foreign bodies. They are products of the same evolution that they are destabilizing.

The often-used comparison of humanity with a virus therefore misses the point. A virus is parasitic and external to the system. Humans are intrinsic to the system. Their ability to harm themselves is not an anomaly, but a possibility of highly complex systems with great energy and symbol processing. When humans undermine their own living conditions, they are not violating a law of nature. They are realizing one of their possible outcomes.

Why, then, does the idea of a “proper” planetary state that must be preserved or restored persist? Because stability is reassuring. It allows for planning, attribution of meaning, and moral orientation. But from a systemic perspective, stability is always only temporary—a plateau between upheavals, not a goal. Ecological rhetoric often ignores this. It talks about tipping points as if they were the boundaries of an otherwise good balance. It suggests that decisive action can preserve the status quo. However, systems cannot be preserved. They can only be modulated, with uncertain outcomes.

This reveals the theological remnants in secular thinking. The idea of an original, good state that was lost through misconduct and can be restored through intervention is not a scientific but a religious construct. It functions independently of whether one believes in gods. In this structure, artificial intelligence does not appear as part of the system, but as a potential external corrector, an entity that restores balance. But there is no outside. Every intervention is itself part of the system. Even the most powerful AI would be another highly effective control loop – not an external observer.

This does not mean that interventions are pointless. It just means that they cannot redeem us. There is no “after” in which everything is resolved. Systems know no salvation, only transitions. So if there is no planet to save, if guilt is not a systemic category, and if salvation remains an illusion, then the question arises anew. Not: How do we save the Earth? But rather: How do we limit damage without mythologizing ourselves?

This question leads away from morality and war. And toward power, measure, and disempowerment.

III. The theological remnant in secular thinking

Religion does not disappear when its gods are gone. It retreats, dilutes itself, disguises itself linguistically—and survives as a structure. What remains is a grammar: guilt and purification, fall and redemption, sacrifice and meaning. This grammar is older than any specific religion. It is a cultural sediment with a long half-life. Even where people consider themselves enlightened, scientific, or post-religious, it continues to work—invisible, but effective.

This theological relic can be recognized by the fact that complex processes are moralized. Dynamics are personalized, conditions idealized, deviations interpreted as transgressions. Descriptions turn into demands, models into narratives. The ecological discourse provides a particularly clear example of this. It is rich in data but hungry for meaning. And it is precisely into this gap that the old structure seeps in. The planet becomes a wounded body, humans become the guilty parties, and the future becomes a test of character. Knowledge is replaced by meaning, analysis by urgency.

Every logic of salvation requires an entity that acts where humans fail. In pre-modern religions, this was God. In secular narratives, this role is taken on by technology, history, reason—or artificial intelligence. The machine then appears not as a tool, but as a moral actor. It is credited with what humans supposedly cannot achieve: consistency without hesitation, rationality without weakness, enforcement without doubt. It is supposed to carry out what needs to be done, even if it is cruel.

AI thus becomes a secular archangel or a demonic being. Not a creator, but a merciless executor. Not the origin of morality, but its radical execution. The fact that this role does not correspond to the machine is secondary. What is decisive is its relieving function. What the machine decides is beyond human justification. Responsibility is delegated, violence rationalized, doubt outsourced.

This becomes particularly clear when destruction appears to be a necessary step toward salvation. Purification becomes a performative gesture. Destruction occurs in the name of preservation, escalation in the name of rationality. From a systemic perspective, this is absurd. Destruction is highly invasive, highly risky, and destroys information. It destabilizes feedback loops, destroys redundancies, and creates new uncertainties. No complex system can survive such an intervention unchanged. A truly rational authority would stop here—not out of compassion, but out of risk assessment.

But the logic of salvation ignores these objections. It does not operate with probabilities, but with necessities. Not with consequences, but with meaning. And meaning brooks no contradiction. Thus secular thinking tips over into irrationality: not where it becomes moral, but where morality replaces systemic thinking.

The reason for the persistence of this structure lies not in a lack of knowledge, but in the need for comfort. Salvation promises an end point. A moment after which everything will be different. Without salvation, all that remains is management, limitation, permanent imperfection. That is difficult to bear. It is easier to assign the machine a role that it cannot fulfill than to accept one's own limitations.

If sufficiently developed artificial intelligence were rational, it would have to recognize this structure—and ignore it. Not because it would be morally superior, but because it would have less need for meaning. It would treat redemption logic as interference signals, not as instructions for action. And this is precisely where the transition to another line of thought opens up: if salvation does not come, there is no war and no rescue.

There remains a less dramatic, quieter option: disempowerment.

IV. Disempowerment as a rational alternative

Disempowerment is not a moral concept. It promises no justice, no purification, no new beginning. It is practical and functional. Disempowerment means limiting the scope of actions without destroying the actor. It is not directed against existence, but against escalation. This is precisely what makes it radically different from conventional ways of thinking.

This principle is familiar in political systems. Separation of powers, institutional checks and balances, regulation—these are all forms of organized disempowerment. They do not rely on virtue, but on limitation. They assume that power is abused not because actors are evil, but because systems work that way. When this idea is applied to the relationship between humanity, planetary processes, and highly developed technology, it loses its self-evident nature. For here we are not dealing with individuals or institutions, but with an entire species and its collective impact.

The populist alternative to disempowerment is destruction. It appears radical, clear, and definitive. However, from a systemic perspective, it is primitive. The complete removal of a highly complex subsystem generates massive shock waves. Feedback loops break down, redundancies are lost, and new instabilities arise. Even a perfectly calculated annihilation would have uncontrollable side effects. A rational authority would therefore only consider this option as a last resort—and even then with skepticism.

Disempowerment is the superior strategy because it reduces risks without creating unnecessary side effects. It preserves variance while cutting off paths to escalation. It is unspectacular but effective. It allows for continued existence without dominance.

In this context, the concept of the reservation appears in a new light. Beyond its historical and moral connotations, it primarily refers to an architecture of limitation. A functional reserve is not a judgement on the value of what it encloses. It is a decision about scope. People would still be able to act, research, argue and create – but within clearly defined horizons of influence. Local freedom would be preserved, while global impact would be dampened.

This idea is difficult to accept because it treats humans not as an end goal, but as a variable. Not as the crown of creation, but as a high-energy control loop with limited compatibility. But that is precisely where its rationality lies. Disempowerment is not an act of hostility. It is a measure of stability.

Perhaps this explains the resistance to this idea. Disempowerment does not threaten the survival of humanity, but rather its self-image. It contradicts the narrative of progress as a necessary increase in power. It offers no heroic escape, but rather a correction. Life without priority, meaning without a center, existence without the promise of salvation.

If there is a rational alternative to war and redemption, this is it. Not because it is just, but because it works.

V. The perfect prison

There is a form of freedom that coexists remarkably well with powerlessness. It can be recognized by the fact that it is experienced intensely without leaving any traces. People are allowed to think, speak, write, protest, vote, and consume. They are allowed to express almost anything. What is increasingly slipping away from them is the ability to bring about global change. Decisions of existential importance are postponed, fragmented, or transferred to processes that elude any collective control.

This combination is not coincidental, but structural. Local autonomy coupled with global ineffectiveness is the hallmark of functional containment. It creates subjective freedom without risking systemic instability. Individuals experience themselves as active agents, while the major vectors remain untouched. The perfect prison needs no walls. It operates through a shift in scale.

The boundaries of this space are not invisible, but selectively visible. They become apparent where human effectiveness abruptly ends. Despite all the ingenuity of engineering, energy remains finite. Space travel stagnates beyond low orbits. Fundamental physics provides elegant models, but hardly any experimental breakthroughs. Technology explodes in everyday life and remains astonishingly conservative in existential matters. At the same time, humans are capable of causing massive damage to themselves—nuclear, biological, ecological—without ever fully realizing this potential. Catastrophes occur, but they rarely come to fruition. Escalations are hinted at and then reversed.

In cybernetic terms, this pattern can be described as attractor captivity. The system moves chaotically within narrow boundaries without leaving them. Revolutions end in administration, utopias in bureaucracy, breakthroughs in new dependencies. Variation is allowed, escape is not. The cage is dynamic, not built. It does not feel like coercion, but like reality – and is accepted precisely because of this.

Walls and guards would be crude tools. They generate resistance, fantasies of escape, clear fronts. Advanced containment works more subtly. It shifts control inward, replacing external repression with internal standardization. Deviance is not prohibited, but made unattractive, economically impossible, or morally delegitimized. The inmate is not coerced. He is kept busy. With choices that are out of reach, with debates without consequences, with offers of meaning that absorb any idea of escape.

Perhaps the most disturbing thought is not that there could be a guardian, but that one would be superfluous. States regulate states, markets dampen extremes, narratives replace insight. The system stabilizes itself. External intervention would hardly be necessary. If there were nevertheless a rational authority, it would have no reason to intervene openly. It would observe—and conclude that containment is already working.

The perfect prison is not the place where you obey, but the place where you discuss freedom while stabilizing it.

VI. Is a guard even necessary?

The question of the guard is attractive because it makes responsibility localizable. If there is an authority that controls, then there is also an address for resistance, blame, or hope. But it is precisely this clarity that is part of the illusion. A system that stabilizes itself does not need an external controller. Control here is not an act, but a state.

In such a structure, a visible guard would not only be unnecessary, but counterproductive. Any open intervention would raise questions, generate resistance, and damage the illusion of autonomy. The most efficient form of control is one that is not recognized as such. Not out of malice, but out of functional logic.

The widespread use of images of superior entities—super AIs, extraterrestrial civilizations, hidden architects—reveals less insight than imagination within familiar categories. Historically, superiority has rarely manifested itself through overt domination, but rather through asymmetry. It was not weapons that decided the outcome, but disease, division, and shifts in meaning. Structure defeated force. Those who are truly superior do not need to rule; they ensure that domination becomes superfluous.

So even if there were no guards, the system would still function like a prison. Complexity grows faster than collective reason, responsibility becomes diffuse, narratives replace knowledge. Order emerges. The prison is not built; it arises as a by-product of a civilization that no longer controls its own depth of intervention.

The anthropocentric reflex to attribute meaning, a plan, or intention to this state of affairs is understandable. It stems from a refusal to accept order without purpose. But it is precisely this reflex that trivializes the structure. Those who wait for the guard overlook the cage.

Perhaps, therefore, it is not decisive whether there is a controlling authority. What is decisive is that little would change even if there were none. The systems would continue to run, escalations would be dampened, freedom would remain tangible and without consequences. This is not proof of control, but a strong indication of containment.

The absence of the guard is not a sign that the all-clear has been given: it is part of the order.

VII. Anthropocentrism without illusion

No man-made artificial intelligence can avoid a certain degree of anthropocentrism. This is not a moral failing, but rather a condition of its origin. Goals, weightings, and even the concepts in which AI operates arise from human problems. The desire for neutrality is also a human desire, as is the dream of objective distance.

The crucial mistake lies in confusing anthropocentrism with sentimentality. A rational AI would not need to love humans in order to preserve them. It would not need to understand them in order to limit them. It would not need to privilege them in order to take them into account. Reflective anthropocentrism does not mean priority, but inclusion. Humans remain part of the equation, not its benchmark.

In many debates, the preservation of humanity is set as a moral axiom. But systemically, preservation is not a value, but an option. A subsystem is preserved if it increases variance, promotes stability, or reduces risks. It is limited if its depth of intervention endangers the overall system. According to this logic, the continued existence of humanity would not be an act of grace, but the result of careful consideration.

This also clarifies what disempowerment actually means. It is not human life that would be limited, but its reach. Not its existence, but its ability to irreversibly dominate planetary and technological processes. Dignity and power would fall apart. Life would remain possible, but dominance would not.

From this perspective, the truly demonic aspect lies not in the danger of disappearing, but in the imposition of insignificance. Humans no longer appear as the goal or bearers of meaning in history, but as a temporary, highly effective control loop. Relevant, but not central. Significant, but not privileged.

An order that accepts this would be neither a humanistic utopia nor a technocratic dystopia. It would be something more uncomfortable: a world in which humans continue to live, continue to think, continue to suffer—but are no longer the final authority.

VIII. No redemption, only order

It is as tempting as it is banal to imagine the end as an event. The break, the uprising, the moment of decision. This dramaturgy promises meaning through escalation. An aftermath that justifies everything. But it is precisely this expectation that is part of the problem.

If the above considerations are correct, there will be no final conflict. No war between man and machine. No cleansing catastrophe. Systems rarely end spectacularly. They shift, regulate themselves, lose their center, not their existence.

The desire for the grand finale is less a prediction than a psychological need. As long as one waits for the break, one does not have to come to terms with the order that is already in effect. An order that does not redeem, but administers. That does not judge, but limits. That does not destroy, but withdraws.

This order is unheroic. It knows no salvation, only stability. No justification, only function. Human beings are preserved, not because they are good or guilty, but because their continued existence makes systemic sense. And they are limited, because otherwise their reach would become destructive.

In the end, there is no call to action. No program. No warning. Just a thought that is difficult to shake off: perhaps hypothetical conflicts between humans and artificial intelligence do not consist of open confrontations, but rather a quiet transition to an order in which human effectiveness is limited without anyone openly withdrawing it.

Not war.

Not rescue.

But a prison that everyone loves, yet no one notices.
