MOTHER HULDA or: The Great Journey

When the final song is over
And the gate of death comes closer
When the pretty vase is broken
And the last words have been spoken

When the precious glass is shattered
When the crowd slowly has scattered
When the mighty tree must fall
And we follow, one and all

Then we pass that ancient well,
Which no soul would choose to dwell
Perhaps to fields so green and wide,
In a world past death and tide

We will walk the path once shown,
Long prepared and gently known
To the house where elders stay,
There to rest without a way

We will dwell in peace so deep,
Rarer here than one might keep
Still we’ll feel a longing near
To return to all held dear

Through the golden gate we wander,
Leaving all we were to ponder
Born again in love’s pure grace
In another time and place

We may start the song once more,
Step through life's familiar door
See the blossom rise anew,
Feel the spark ignite and brew

On the table, freshly placed,
Stands a vase with gentle grace
Saplings rise beneath the skies
The Great Mother gently guides
