Irene Beddies

Cold Morning

Cold Morning

The moon is setting, its light fading away.
It leaves the eastern sky’s pale grey.
In faint blue shine ascends the winter day.

The ground is frozen deep. It smells of snow
in the cold damp air – although
the sky is clear yet and the stars are low.

The pond accumulated a glossy shell
where usually noisy ducks feed well.
Now they are bound to slide across this hell.

On its opposite bank the towering fir
stands green and doesn’t stir,
a resting-place that many crows prefer.
