The Matador

Vienen en Jose, eres el toro . .

José hizo otro guión a Carlos.

"Venga hombre viejo, bebida."

"Carlos ostenta . . . "Yo this el matador."

Come on Jose, you're the bull . . . and I'm the matador.

Jesepe said, "Yea, you're the stupid bull.  Charge!"

Carlos, the matador, wielded a red cape and a real sword.  Jose took another swipe from his beer and then charged full tilt.  Carlos skillfully swiveled the cape around and tapped Jose on the shoulder with his sword.

Jose made more passes, each time Carlos artfully moving the cape and tapping Jose harder and harder.

Hector opened another liter of beer, took a swig, and then passed it around.  Each boy took a long draught from the bottle.

Jesus said, "What we need is a real bull . . . and a real bull ring instead of this stinking back alley behind the tenements.  I'd have that bull running in circles and then I'd stab him in the neck, huuh" as he made a stabbing motion with his right arm."

"I saw you at the bull run in Pamplona last month—you just sat on the fence the whole time.  You were too afraid to even go on the street in front of the bulls.  The rest of us ran with them.  Jose even got trampled and sent to the hospital."

"Go Jose, Go," as they slapped him on the back with approval.  Jose made another dash at Carlos.

An old man stepped out of his modest one-room shack at the end of the passage and walked towards the boys using his cane, "Buenas dias hombres.  Be careful with that sword."

Hector taunted, "Pero, Pero, they all joined in, Pero, Pero, Pero and then toro, toro, toro."

"Yea, he's going to be our bull.  Come on old man, drink some cerveza.  Hector pushed the man towards the other boys and Jose handed him the bottle.  He took a few swigs.

"Come on, drink up."  Hector tilted the bottle up in the man's mouth and he drank some more.  They cheered and then Hector pushed him towards Carlos, "Charge, old man."

The man stumbled forward and Carlos swiveled the red cape around with a flourish and hit the man hard on the shoulder with his sword.  More cheers!

"Come on old man, drink up."

The  boys chanted, "Toro, Toro, Toro."

Hector grabbed the bottle and crammed it down the old man's mouth.  He drank half a liter in one gulp.  The man smiled.  Now he was really feeling drunk.

Jose turned him around and pushed him towards Carlos.  The man got into the spirit of the fight and held his cane out in front like a horn while he stumbled forward.  More cheers when the red cape glided over the man's head.  This time Carlos stabbed the man in the shoulder.  He cried out in pain and grabbed hold of his injured arm with his opposite hand.

The boys shout louder, "Toro, Toro, Toro . . . Toro, Toro, Toro.   Charge!"

Jose pushed the man for another run and this time Carlos wounded the other shoulder.  The man bent over in pain.

It was amazing that he was still standing on his feet.  After a few minutes he pulled himself upright and tried to walk away, but the boys surround him.

Hector shouted "Yo, le banderilleros," while he pulled a knife out of his pocket and opened it.  He circled the man while Jose pushed him towards Carlos.  While he was running towards the matador, Hector stabbed the man in the upper back and left the knife in his body.

Cheers.  The boys went wild with excitement.

The old man made one last attempt to break free, but the boys held him in place.

Jesus took out his pocket knife, danced around the old man and then gouged him in the  stomach.  Two more boys followed suit.  The old man bent over, stumbled, but still did not fall.

Carlos moves towards the man.  He windmilled the faena (sword) through the air and then speared the man's through the neck for the kill.  More cheers.

"Carlos boasts . . . "Yo esta el matador."

The other boys slapped him on the back.

He shouted,"El matador, el matador.  El toro," and then he kicked the body of the old man several times.

The boys stood around for a few minutes passing another bottle and congratulating themselves on the slaughter.

What they have done, killing a man for sport, did not even register in their minds.  "El toro, el bestia," they shouted as they kick him one last time and walk away.
